RECLAIMING WORSHIP

THE GREATEST MOOD-ALTERING DRUG

If Satan can’t steal your worship, he can’t touch your goods. He knows that worship is a hindering hedge to his plan, so the first thing he tries to do is to take away your worship. Ask Job. He can vouch for this truth. It was this man’s custom to frequently offer sacrifices on behalf of his children.

So it was, when the days of feasting had run their course, that Job would send and sanctify them [his children], and he would rise early in the morning and offer burnt offerings according to the number of them all. For Job said, “It may be that my sons have sinned and cursed God in their hearts.” Thus Job did regularly.1

Job was always praying and sacrificing over his children (animal sacrifice was the primary way to worship in those days). Why did he constantly offer sacrifices? Job gave us a clue that indicates a problem that was very close to his heart. He said, “It may be that my sons have sinned and cursed God in their hearts.”

When the enemy finally struck Job’s physical body with disease, what was the very first thing Job’s wife told him? “Do you still hold fast to your integrity? Curse God and die!”2

Job was trying to counteract a negative influence in his household as well as in the world. Then Satan came to God and said, “Let me touch them, let me do this, and Job won’t worship You anymore.” Then God said, “Okay, I’ll lengthen your chain and let you have some access to Job’s life. He will still worship Me. You will see.”

THE FIRST THING SATAN TOOK WAS JOB’S ABILITY TO WORSHIP

If you read the book of Job, you will notice that the first thing Satan touched was not Job’s children. The first thing he took was the livestock (including cattle [or oxen] and sheep). In the culture of the Old Testament, Satan had destroyed Job’s ability to worship when he took away the man’s herds of sacrificial animals. Only after he took away Job’s ability to worship was Satan able to touch anything else in his life.

Worship is the jugular vein of life in God’s kingdom. If Satan can stop your worship, then he will have access to anything else in your life. If you read the very last chapter of Job, you will notice that an interesting thing happened.

God talked to Job’s friends and said, “Hey, guys, I need you to do something. I’m pretty upset with you, so I want you to bring some bullocks and oxen and offer them to Me as sacrifices. But I want Job to pray over them!”

It was as if God wanted the sacrifices to count as coming from Job! (Much like I give my children money to put in the Sunday school offering. It comes from me, but it becomes their offering.)

Once Job was “given” the bullocks and the oxen to offer as sacrifices, the very next verse says that everything that Job had was restored and more.
